Today is Wednesday, 26th of August. Want to write about something I’ve noticed change for the better in India: the road infrastructure.
I left India for the longer term back in 2003, and since then I’ve mostly been based in the UK, going back for visits here and there. I don’t want to be the sort of person who’s always complaining about things back home, so I’ll say this plainly: the road infrastructure has genuinely improved, significantly, over the last fifteen, twenty years.
Roads are the arteries of a country, and I think the big story here is the motorways, the highways. That’s what matters most. The stretch of proper connecting roads, motorways linking the big cities, has grown enormously over the last couple of decades.
Inner city roads are a different story though. They’re still not properly maintained in a lot of places, flood easily whenever it rains, plenty of potholes. Though, to be fair, I can hardly complain about potholes when the UK itself is riddled with them everywhere you look.
I remember a conversation with my friend Harsh about this, must have been close to twenty years ago now. I’d just been back in the UK and we got talking about infrastructure there. I told him then, there will come a day when you can travel by road from Delhi to Mumbai, properly, and that it would change the whole picture, how people get around, because at the moment…
